Welcome to the May edition of your monthly Synopsis storage bulletin from Potato Storage Insight.


Apologies for the late arrival of this bulletin; much of May was taken up with preparations for our 3rd strategic Potato Storage Day (see below).


After a very dry April, potato planting largely drew to a close earlier this month but crop development has been hampered by unseasonally cool weather ahead of the recent heatwave.

TECHNICAL INSIGHT


POTATO STORAGE DAY


A fantastic turnout of 140 delegates, exhibitors and speakers contributed to another hugely successful SDF & PSI run Potato Storage Day held at Dyson Farming in south Lincolnshire on 20 May.


Organisers Simon Faulkner & Adrian Cunnington were hugely grateful for the support received from everyone concerned. Special mentions go to principal sponsors Farm Electronics and UPL and to the farm manager of Dyson's Leadenhall site, Garry Wilkinson.


Visitors to the Day came from far and wide including Cornwall, Essex, Kent, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Shropshire and Scotland.


The event also attracted over 20 exhibitors & speakers focusing specifically on storage. A full list of participating organisations is below:

Speakers at the event included Simon covering varieties and potato operations at the host business, Adrian speaking on store system selection, cost control and CIPC residues, Gregor Hoefter of GridDuck energy data logging, Stuart Jackson of UPL agchem, Luke Corbett of Potato Diary recording systems and Prof. Debbie Rees from Greenwich University.


Debbie presented data from further work on the P-Pod recording systems that were held with the 2025/6 crop in the Dyson stores. The systems feature real-time logging of the store atmosphere and 'live logging' of related crop information such as weight loss:
