Sprout Suppression Strategies for Potatoes

A strategy for sprout suppression is an important aspect of any storage where crop is destined to be held for more than a few weeks.


Currently, potato storage is in a state of flux following the loss of CIPC and, despite a generally good initial year of sprout control in 2020/21, the position is still a very new one for many across the industry.


There has been a great reliance in the ‘CIPC era’ on chemical control but that will need to change going forward. This diagram summarises some of the other factors we need to consider when looking to manage stores and, in particular, provide adequate sprout control:
