PSI course now full for 2024

The 2024 PSI Potato Store Managers' Course is being held next month on 28/29 February at The Crown Hotel in Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire.

This is a participative course for growers and store managers who are involved in the day-to-day management of potato stores. The course follows a tried and tested format and will include talks, group discussions and practical interactive sessions, focusing on all aspects of potato storage. There will be opportunity for delegates to raise specific concerns and for these to be addressed during the course on a 1:1 or group basis. Delegate numbers are limited to 20, so speedy application is recommended. Areas covered will include:

Storing potatoes to meet market needs

Composition, activity & persistence of chemicals

Basic physiology for storage

Store monitoring

Recognition, biology & control of storage diseases

Maintaining skin finish for pre‑packing

Drying, wound healing & pull-down

Managing processing crop quality

Integrated management and sprout suppression

Seed store management

Ethylene management

Store loading strategies

Practical store operation

Store ventilation

Quality control and protocols

Condensation control

Application of crop protection chemistry for treatment of stored potatoes & potato stores

Safe use, handling, transport & storage of chemicals for potato storage

Sprout suppression options post-CIPC

Storage buildings and control systems

Store management principles

Recognition, biology & control of storage pests

Energy efficiency & cost control

Health & safety

Tutors will include Adrian Cunnington of PSI and Glyn Harper, both formerly of Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research. Adrian Cunnington is an accredited BASIS Trainer. The course is organised by Potato Storage Insight Ltd (PSI) of which Adrian Cunnington is a director.

All course participants have the option to take the BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection (Stored Potatoes) examination at extra cost. This can be booked at the outset or may be added immediately after completion of the course. Details are available at
